It’s finally time to dress for keeping cool!
Hasn’t it been amazing to actually see the sun in the UK this week and feel the warmth on our skin as we step outside? A big change from the need for endless layers!
But here begins another problem….how to stay cool!
So here are the best fabrics for keeping you feeling fresh even when the temperatures are high.
1. Linen
If there's one fabric I always recommend for summer, it's linen. This lightweight, breathable material is made from flax fibers and is practically built for warm weather. Linen allows heat to escape and air to flow, keeping you cool even on scorching days.
Stylist tip: Don’t worry about a few wrinkles—creased linen is part of the relaxed laid back look and feel linen gives.
2. Cotton
You can't go wrong with cotton, especially lightweight woven cottons like voile, lawn, or poplin. It’s soft, absorbent, and lets your skin breathe and it’s incredibly versatile and easy to care for.
Stylist tip: Choose 100% cotton over cotton blends, which often contain synthetics that trap heat. Look for seersucker, a puckered version of cotton that sits slightly off the skin for extra airflow.
3. Chambray
This fabric looks like denim but is typically made from lighter cotton yarns, making it far more breathable.
Stylist tip: A chambray shirt works really well with white trousers or tucked into a linen skirt for a polished casual look.
4. Tencel (Lyocell)
Tencel, also known as lyocell, is an eco-conscious fabric. It’s made from wood pulp (often eucalyptus) and is soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking—perfect for hot days when you want to look put-together without melting.
Stylist tip: Tencel is a fantastic alternative to cotton and silk for summer blouses, jumpsuits, and even suits. It’s also ideal for travel thanks to its wrinkle resistance.
5. Silk
Silk can be summer-friendly—if you pick the right kind. Lightweight silks like crepe de chine or silk chiffon can feel luxurious and cool against the skin.
Stylist tip: Avoid heavy silks or satin finishes during extreme heat. And remember, silk doesn’t love perspiration, so opt for looser cuts that allow for air movement.
Remember, style isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling good, too. Ensuring that you stay cool in the heat is a big part of this!
I really hope that you have found this post helpful, please get in touch if you have any style queries you would like answering in future posts.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine!
